In 2024 Apple is introduced a “Keep Downloaded” option in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia.This feature allows users to manually keep specific iCloud Drive files or folders permanently stored locally—preventing them from being automatically removed to save space (macrumors.com).

How it works

  • On iOS/iPadOS: Long‑press a file in the Files app and tap “Keep Downloaded.”
  • On macOS: Control-click a file/folder in iCloud Drive in Finder and select “Keep Downloaded.”
  • The item’s iCloud icon turns solid gray to indicate it's pinned locally (macworld.com).
